James Higgins, DO
Family Medicine
“When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses not zebras.” - Dr. Theodore Woodward
Born and raised in Long Island, Dr. James Higgins has been practicing in East Islip for over 20 years after returning “home” after establishing a large family medicine practice in rural South Carolina. He chose to become a primary care doctor to have one-on-one interactions with his patients and to know he was helping them to make important decisions to maintain and improve the quality of their lives.
Dr. Higgins states that his favorite part of being a physician is his daily interactions with his patients as he finds great privilege and joy in sharing their life journeys. Dr Higgins patients describe him as being a good listener, compassionate, and an excellent physician.
Dr. Higgins has two sons, both successful in their careers in finance. As proud as he is of their success, he is most proud of how close “the boys” and his entire family have remained over the years. In his free time, Dr. Higgins likes to kayak, bike, and garden. He is an avid sports fan, enjoying football, hockey, baseball, soccer, and golf. Dr. Higgins lists Alzheimer’s Association and American Cancer Society as causes that remain important to him.
