2024 FLU Season
Flu season begins each year Mid-October and runs through the end of March. The flu vaccine is good for about 6-months which is why doctors recommend not getting your flu shot too early. Now is a great time to get your flu shot! According to the New York State Department of Health, the flu has not yet hit New York, so now is a great time to get your flu shot.
What is the flu?
The Flu is a virus that can cause fever, chills, and cough. Unfortunately, in older patients or patients with certain chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart failure and COPD, the flu can lead to complications such as Pneumonia and even worse Sepsis (an infection in the blood).
Why it is a good idea to consider getting a flu vaccine this season?
Getting protection from the flu became even more important since there are now 3 serious respiratory illnesses of concern:
- Flu
- COVID-19
- RSV
The flu vaccine has been around for many years, and despite rumors to the contrary, patients do not get the flu from the flu shot. Certain people experience the immune reaction, which is your body responding to the vaccine itself, exactly how it is supposed to work. In addition to protecting you from the flu and its many complications, Seniors (age 65+) who get the Flu vaccine have been found to have less heart attacks.
What else can I do to protect myself from the flu?
Of course, the flu shot is the best way to protect yourself, but washing your hands and surfaces in your home and workplace is still very important. It is also important to know the symptoms of flu and call your doctor quickly when you start to have symptoms. There are special medications for the flu that can speed your recovery if given quickly.
Why get my flu shot at my doctor’s office vs a pharmacy?
Your primary care doctor knows your chronic conditions and other health issues. Your doctor is in the best position to determine whether you should have the “standard” flu shot or the “high dose” flu shot. Making an appointment with your doctor also allows you to discuss other health concerns and to make sure you have your annual wellness visit/physical which is totally covered by health insurance and Medicare.
